Are you training? Part III; How to train your subconscious mind

As I spoke in the last article, there are ways to actually train your subconscious mind. In the realm of firearms it is extremely difficult as you can just practice shooting at people without the worry of dire consequences. It is not only illegal but immoral as well. Even if you found a moron that would let you shoot at them with live ammunition, it still is wrong.

Stress inoculation is a form of training whereby you allow yourself to use training aids to help mimic a real world scenario where you can’t go out and do it. Think about it…a baseball player can practice all year round doing exactly what they will experience during a live game. Now there are some differences, such as the size of the crowd and perhaps the meaning of the game itself. The mechanics of it, the base running, the pitching, the batting can all be replicated almost to the finest degree. Firearms are much different.

One way to train yourself if through live situations and scenario training. When we did training at the police department that was shoot or don’t shoot with actors on the screen, it still felt real. It is a way of preparing you in a small way for the sights and sounds that you may experience in a real world situation.

In our 2.0 Firearms Skills and Drills class, we take our students through a variety of scenarios and allow them to experience sights and sounds that may be found in a scary situation or a life threatening encounter. Many of the students taking this class have already taken our Introduction to Firearms class, so they are building on their skills related to situational awareness and their protective instincts.

It’s very gratifying to watch people from all types of backgrounds that had no firearms experience or knowledge and watch them as they advance and grow and increase their safety awareness quotient.
